Holy Spirit acts as Christ’s presence on earth, counseling and encouraging Christians as they battle the temptations of the world and the forces of Satan. He gives spiritual gifts for the purpose of strengthening the body of Christ.

The Apostle Paul said: “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

…for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” (1 Corinthians 12:1; 8-11).

These Spiritual Gifts are often referred to as, “The Nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit.” These are supernatural gifts and, according to scripture, they are available to all Christians.

The nine gifts of Holy Spirit fall into three categories:

  1. The Gifts of Revelation
  2. The Gifts of Inspiration And
  3. The Gifts of Power

Category #1: Gifts of Revelation:

1-The Word of Knowledge: The Word of Knowledge is a supernatural revelation of Divine knowledge or insight in the Divine mind, will or plan of God. A supernatural ability to know things that could not be known of oneself. Obtaining supernatural knowledge about something that you have no ability or means of knowing based on your human intelligence.

2-The Word of Wisdom: This gift of Holy Spirit works with the word of knowledge. It gives you the ability and understanding of how to apply the word of knowledge. Holy Spirit gives a supernatural revelation, or insight into the divine will and purpose of God. This gift is often given by the Spirit to solve perplexing problems and situations in life.

3-Discerning of Spirits: This is a supernatural revelation or insight into the realm of spirits to detect evil or demonic spirit’s presence and plans. This gift equips the discerner to see evil spirits that are operating in someone’s life. Holy Spirit here reveals the hidden things in darkness, exposing the evil spirits so that the person can experience a breakthrough from their bondage.

Category #2: Gifts of Inspiration:

4-Gift of Prophecy: This is the gift of the Holy Spirit which the scripture says, “to especially desire.” This gift is a direct Word from the Lord that is given to someone else to edify and build them up. Prophecy is the supernatural utterance in the native tongue. It is a miracle of divine utterance, not conceived by human thought or reasoning. It includes speaking unto men to edification, exhortation, and comfort.

5-Divers Kinds of Tongues: This gift of the Holy Spirit is simply a supernatural ability to speak and pray in a tongue that you do not naturally know. This can be spoken forth in prayer direct to God, or in an assembly where God anoints another Believer, with the gift of interpretation, to interpret the word spoken in the native tongue of the congregation (1 Corinthians 14:2, 13-14). The supernatural utterance in other languages that are not known to the speaker.

6-The Interpretation of Tongues: This gift of the Holy Spirit helps in accurate interpretation the tongue that was spoken. This can either be for yourself (see 1 Corinthians 14:13-14) or for the church (see 1 Corinthians 14:27-28). Holy Spirit gives a supernatural ability to interpret in the native tongue what is uttered in other languages not known by the one who interprets by the Spirit.

Category #3: Gifts of Power (Power Gifts):

7-Gift of Faith:
This gift of the Holy Spirit grows as we walk with the Lord. You are saved by faith. The gift of faith is knowing full well that you cannot accomplish something on your own, but that Lord has empowered you to move into new levels to do miracles and wonders in His name. This is a supernatural ability to believe God without human doubt, unbelief, and reasonings.

8-The Gift of Healing:
There are actually different kinds of healings that the Spirit will do. Notice that the scripture says “gifts,” plural. These gifts equip you in various ways to access healing for yourself or be an anointed vessel that Holy Spirit works through to bring healing to others. This gift brings healing to all manner of sickness by supernatural power, without human aid or medicine.

9-The Working of Miracles:
This gift of the Holy Spirit is depicted throughout the Bible, from Moses parting the Red Sea to Jesus feeding 5000 people. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Therefore, He is still in the business of working miracles. Similar to the word of knowledge, this spiritual gift is manifested not by human efforts, but by the Holy Spirit. The work is unexplainable by nature. It edifies and delivers others. It is a supernatural power to intervene in the ordinary course of nature and to counteract natural laws if necessary.

According to Scripture, the Gifts of the Spirit are to continue to work through the Followers of Christ until His return.

Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” (John 14:12-14)

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not for you to use how you want. They have specific purposes for God’s Kingdom. They are intended to glorify God by revealing more of who He is and displaying His sovereignty and power over all things.

These gifts are available to all believers and distributed by Holy Spirit, according to His will.

The Bible says;

  1. “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all…”—1 Corinthians 12:7
  2. “But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”—1 Corinthians 12:11
